Ammonia volatilization from nitrogen fertilizers applied to sugarcane straw Rev. Ciênc. Agron.
Otto,Rafael; Zavaschi,Eduardo; Souza Netto,Gerson José Marquesi de; Machado,Bianca de Almeida; Mira,Acácio Bezerra de.
ABSTRACT Maintenance of crop residues over soil surface under conservational systems limits incorporation of nitrogen fertilizers into the soil. Application of urea over crop residues enhance N-NH3 volatilization losses, justifying the usage of urease inhibitors or N sources less susceptible to volatilization under such conditions. This study aimed to evaluate volatilization losses from N sources applied over sugarcane straw. A field trial was carried out in a sugarcane field in Iracemapolis, Sao Paulo on a Typic Kandiudox in June 2014. We used a complete block experimental design, with seven treatments and four replications. Treatments included Control [CO], ammonium nitrate [AN], NS30TM (ammonium nitrate-75% and ammonium sulfate-25% fused mixture)...

Decision-making on the optimum timing for nitrogen fertilization on sugarcane ratoon Scientia Agricola
Castro,Sérgio Gustavo Quassi de; Rossi Neto,João; Kölln,Oriel Tiago; Borges,Bernardo Melo Montes Nogueira; Franco,Henrique Coutinho Junqueira.
ABSTRACT: Low efficiency of nitrogen from fertilizers is a major concern worldwide, threatening the sustainability of sugarcane production. The N use efficiency (NUE) by sugarcane can be improved by adopting better fertilizing management practices, reducing environmental impacts. This work evaluated the effects of varying N rates and time of application on stalks and sugar yield in ratoon harvested early in the crop season. The experimental design was a randomized block in a 2 × 4 factorial design and a control (no N) with five replications, including two application times (45 or 90 DAH – days after harvest) and four N rates (50, 100, 150, or 200 kg N ha−1). The time of N fertilizer application promoted differences in stalk yield, as the cumulative yield...

Harvest managements and cultural practices in sugarcane Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Castro,Sérgio Gustavo Quassi de; Franco,Henrique Coutinho Junqueira; Mutton,Miguel Ângelo.
The presence of trash from the mechanical harvest of green cane on sugarcane plantations promotes changes in the agricultural management, for example, in the mechanical cultural practices of ratoon cane in-between the rows and nitrogen (N) fertilization. The goal of this study was to evaluate the performance of sugarcane in different harvest systems, associated to the mechanical cultural practices in interrows and N rates. The study was carried out on a sugarcane plantation in Sales Oliveira, São Paulo, Brazil, with the sugarcane variety SP81-3250, on soil classified as Acrudox, in a randomized block design with split-split plots and four replications. The main treatments consisted of harvest systems (harvesting green cane or burnt cane), the secondary...

Sugarcane trash levels in soil affects the fungi but not bacteria in a short-term field experiment BJM

Abstract The sugarcane in Brazil is passing through a management transition that is leading to the abolition of pre-harvest burning. Without burning, large amounts of sugarcane trash is generated, and there is a discussion regarding the utilization of this biomass in the industry versus keeping it in the field to improve soil quality. To study the effects of the trash removal on soil quality, we established an experimental sugarcane plantation with different levels of trash over the soil (0%, 50% and 100% of the original trash deposition) and analyzed the structure of the bacterial and fungal community as the bioindicators of impacts. The soil DNA was extracted, and the microbial community was screened by denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis in two...

Temporal and Spatial Uncertainty of Erosion Soil Loss from an Argisol Under Sugarcane Management Scenarios Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Mendonça,Patrícia Gabarra; Teixeira,Daniel De Bortoli; Moitinho,Mara Regina; Silva Junior,João Fernandes da; Oliveira,Ismênia Ribeiro de; Martins Filho,Marcílio Vieira; Marques Junior,José; Pereira,Gener Tadeu.
ABSTRACT The identification of erosion-susceptible areas is fundamental for the adoption of soil conservation practices. Thus, the best way to estimate the spatial pattern of soil erosion must be identified, in which the process uncertainties are also taken into consideration. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the spatial and temporal uncertainty of soil loss under two scenarios of sugarcane harvest management: green cane (GC) and burnt cane (BC). The study was carried out on a 200-ha area, in Tabapuã, São Paulo State, Brazil. A regular 626-point sampling grid was established in the area, with equidistant intervals of 50 m and a final plant density of about 3.3 samples per ha. The probability that the soil loss would exceed the tolerable limit of...
